  • Please clarify the intended use of F&E Structural Steel (50500405). No plan calls, details, or special provisions were provided to clarify the Structural Steel. Please provide locations, sizes, and dimensions of proposed Structural Steel.
    This pay item covers the bracing, brackets, and fill plates at each pier. See sheets 61, 62, and 69 for bracing details, locations, sizes, and information necessary to determine dimensions of each pier’s bracing, brackets, and fill plates. Final dimensions of these components at each pier vary and are to be determined by the contractor using the aforementioned details. (01/17/2024)

  • Please clarify the painting requirements for braced piers. Contract Plan sheet 56, note 7 calls out the 3-coat organic zinc-rich epoxy-urethane shop system w/ field touch-up. Sheet 61 note states that all piles are to be painted above grade with the inorganic zinc-rich shop prime and one complete coat of field paint. Furthermore, there is no mention of the requirements for the components of the pier bracing (i.e. the WT-brackets, angle bracing and fill plates for the angle bracing, & hardware).
    The note on sheet 56 calls for shop painting of all structural steel, which includes the bracing, brackets, and fill plates. This note however excludes the H-piles and cap plates, which are to be painted with the shop applied primer and the exposed portions above grade will receive the remaining field applied portions of that paint system, prior to attaching the bracing.   • Please re-confirm the answer to the RFI in the previous letting: the 105' spans are only shown with the horizontal safety railing, and the 207' span will only have the decorative fascia panels and the woven wire mesh.
    Confirmed, the previous RFI response still applies. Please refer to the cross sections on sheet 56 for further confirmation. (01/17/2024)

  • The Contract Plans (Sht 54) indicate that the Exist Aerial Lines (AT&T & ComEd) on either side of IL-59 are to be raised. The Contract Specifications (pg 2 & 3) states "Relocate to underground or raise overhead cable..." Please clarify what exactly will be done with these utilities as this will affect the bridge work (i.e. there will be a difference in the impact of overhead vs. underground lines in the bridge truss erection, deck concrete placement, etc.).
    “Along the east side of IL 59: • ComEd has installed new poles and raised the overhead line to be clear of the proposed bridge. ComEd has agreed to de-energize the line and temporarily remove it during the truss installation • AT&T and Verizon will be relocating their lines to the new poles and lowering them to go under the proposed bridge Along the west side of IL 59: • AT&T will be lowering their lines to avoid conflict with the bridge. They originally were considering burying a segment of this line” (01/17/2024)

  • Due to the amount and density of vegetative material within the limits of construction (especially on the West side of IL-59) this material would need to be cleared and disposed of. In general not much earthwork is being done, but the entire area is shown to be final landscaped/restored with seeding (with the seedbed needing to be prepped for seeding). Please consider adding an item of work for "Clearing".
    Clearing is part of this contract as described in the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. Section 201.01(a) - Clearing shall consist of the removal and disposal of all obstructions such as fences, walls, foundations, buildings, accumulations of rubbish of whatever nature and existing structures, the removal of which is not otherwise provided for in Article 501.07; all logs, shrubs, bushes, saplings, grass, weeds, other vegetation and stumps of a diameter less than 6 in. (150 mm). Section 201.03 - Removal of Obstructions and Other Materials. All items defined as clearing in Article 201.01(a) shall be removed and disposed of as required by these Specifications - Method of Measurement. This work will be measured for payment as follows. Clearing. Clearing will not be measured for payment. The contractor shall include the effort and cost for clearing in the bid in accordance with these Specifications. A pay item for clearing will not be in these bidding docs. (01/10/2024)
