  • Previous IDOT SPs for absorptive NAWs have had the following testing requirement: “…shall be either a freeze/thaw test according to AASHTO T 161 (ASTM C 666) Procedure A or B, or it shall be a salt scaling test according to ASTM C 672”. ASTM C666 has been included as an acceptability test on numerous contracts (60B03, 60I32, 60R06, 64E26, 70C01, 61A96) over the last 15 years and as recent as 61J65 which bid last letting. Please confirm this testing language is acceptable for this contract.
    The Noise Abatement Wall (NAWs) special provision have been updated in 2022 and this is from our IDOT Guide Bridge Special Provision (GBSP) intended to be followed. Since ASTM C666 is not listed in the GBSP, we have no expectation that it would be allowed. The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/17/2024)

  • Please advise where the 1,354' Conduit Attached to Structure, 4" GS PVC coated is to be installed.
    The locations are to be determined by the Engineer where existing conduits are found to be in close proximity of the existing noise walls. The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/12/2024)

  • Can the precast noisewalls be reflective or do they have to be absorptive? The spcl provisions(page 32) indicate that an absorptive system may be used as an alternate to a reflective system but the plans show absorptive requirements. If an absorptive wall is used, is a freeze/thaw test according to ASTM C666 or a salt scaling test according to ASTM C672 acceptable - as allowed on previous IDOT projects. This contract S.P. does not allow freeze/thaw test per ASTM C666 as an acceptability test.
    The project special provision states that an absorptive system may be used as an alternate to a reflective system Since the plans already show an absorptive system, there isn't an allowed alternate system. A reflective system may not be substituted for the absorptive system. We are not aware of ASTM C666 having been allowed as a test for acceptability for NAWs on previous IDOT projects. The project special provision does not list ASTM C666, so it would not be allowed. The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/12/2024)

  • Are the existing drawings for the wood noise wall available?
    The Department is in the process of compiling the requested information and will post it to the additional information folder on the website. Contractors should monitor the website for the updated information. (04/10/2024)

  • Plan sheet 21 does not show the wall alignment, this layer appears to have been turned off in the CAD file when it was printed. Please re-print showing the line.

  • Will reinforcing be required in the drilled shafts for the noise wall if the designer does not require it in their design?
    The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. Per the Special Provisions, "A complete wall and foundation design submittal, including design calculations for wall panels, posts, foundations, and all connections and shop drawings shall be submitted to the Department for review and approval no later than 90 days prior to beginning construction of the wall." Reinforcement will be required per the Contractor's approved design. (04/03/2024)
