  • Timber Rail: Special Provision page 3 notes ‘splice plates’. This suggests that mid-span timber rail splices will be acceptable. Please provide a detail for the splice plate connection and hardware. What is the acceptable tolerance for the dimensions of the wood? There will be dimensional differences between one plank and the next because it’s wood, not steel.
    The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (04/15/2020)

  • Timber Rail: This provision also notes that all steel products be painted. This suggests that the pressure treated timber rail will be provided with its natural color. AISC: Please confirm that the Bridge Rail post and anchor assemblies will need to be fabricated by a shop certified by AISC as prescribed in IDOT Article 106.08 ‘Certification of Metal Fabricators’.
