  • If concrete patching is completed in certain areas, are you allowed to complete any HMA paving in 2021?
Per sequence of construction operations, all the 16” Class B Patching work is expected to be completed in 2021. No deviation from the sequence will be permitted except by written permission from the Engineer. The remaining construction items, including milling and HMA paving will begin during the 2022 construction season. Due to the time and the amount work, the intent was to do the patching in 2021 and the milling and resurfacing in 2022. (06/03/2021)

  • Is a temporary wedge or a milled slope at the centerline between two open lanes that is 6 inches Vertical to 18 inches Horizontal (1V:3H) acceptable to meet the “Maximum Drop-Offs Between Adjacent Lanes”?
No wedge should be needed during the milling phases of the project since the work will be done during staging as shown on staging typicals sheet 32. (06/03/2021)

  • Page 10 of the special provisions under the heading ‘Maximum Drop-Offs Between Adjacent Lanes’ states “The contractor shall adjust his milling and paving operations so that all traffic lanes are open at the end of each work day”. It then lists 2 options that will meet that requirement. Is milling full width from outside of one shoulder through both traffic lanes to the outside of the other shoulder an acceptable method to meet the maximum drop-off requirement and have all lanes open daily?
The sequence of operation requires one lane at a time, including the shoulder, being closed while milling is being done to allow the flow of traffic on the adjacent lane during work. Please refer to the staging typical. (06/03/2021)

  • Page 5 of the special provisions under the heading “US 20 from IL 2 to Montague Road” states "Milled pavement shall be resurfaced before opening the road to traffic". Page 15 of the special provisions under “Class B Patches, 10 Inch (Special)” states “This patching is to be completed …after the removal of the existing hot-mix asphalt”. Will there be any Class B Patches, 10” (Special) on US 20 from IL 2 to Montague Rd?
Yes, class B patching will be placed where it is needed along the entire project. Special provision under “US 20 from IL 2 to Montague Road” is written to specify milled pavement MUST be resurfaced before opening the road to traffic. (06/03/2021)

  • Do all traffic lanes eastbound and westbound need to be open at the end of each workday? Is one open traffic lane in each direction at the end of each workday acceptable?
One lane EB & WB will remain open with staging applied. Refer to staging typical. When work is done outside of staging, one lane day closures will only be used to complete the remaining work. (06/03/2021)

  • Can you confirm that the shoulders that are not 8' wide or greater will not be QCP.
QCP will be used for shoulders wider than 8’. The inside 4’ shoulder will be QC/QA. (05/27/2021)

  • On the mix table, you have N70 IL9.5 Mix E that same mix has a pay item as N70 IL9.5FG mix E. which one do you want? the 9.5 FG or the easier to pass IFIT/hamburg IL9.5......
The Department is in the process of issuing an addendum, please monitor the website for the addendum. (05/25/2021)
