  • Tangent Terminals – MASH Approved: IDOT response to previous question suggests that only MASH approved terminals will be allowed. Q1) Please advise which terminal will be available to substitute for a Traffic Barrier Terminal Type 1 SPL – FLARE as the current QPL for TBT 1 SPL does not list a MASH approved FLARE system. Q2) Will IDOT issue an Addendum stating only the MASH tangent terminal will be allowed on this project so it is clear to all bidders?
Effective for contracts let after June 30, 2018, Guardrail Barrier Terminal, Type 1 (Special) Tangent will be required to comply with MASH testing criteria. (Devices that are currently approved for use as meeting the NCHRP 350 testing criteria will no longer be allowed on contracts let after June 30, 2018.) Devices that comply with the NCHRP 350 testing criteria will continue to be allowed on all active contracts let on or before June 30, 2018. The Qualified Product List for Traffic Barrier Terminal, Type 1 (Special) will be revised effective July 1, 2018 to reflect this change. (06/07/2018)

  • AISC Strong and Weak Posts: Q1) Please advise what the minimum requirements are for fabricators to fabricate a safety device attached to a structure?
The fabrication requirements for these items are specified in Section 630 of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. (06/07/2018)

  • HMA: Illinois 146 Johnson County Station 578+94, and Old US 51 in Pulaski County: Will it be acceptable to drive the guardrail posts through the existing HMA shoulder in lieu of coring holes in the shoulder prior to driving the posts? At one location this would match the existing guardrail installation. Traffic Control 701206-04: Please advise which location(s) will require Traffic Control Standard 701206.
Construction requirements shall be according to Article 630.06 of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. Standard 701206 should be applied during guardrail operations which require overnight lane closures, specifically the location at structure 033-0004 in Hamilton county. (06/07/2018)

  • Non-Block Guardrail: Please confirm that it is the intent to install ‘Non-Block Guardrail utilizing steel posts as depicted in IDOT Standard 630006 except a curved guardrail panel will form the curve. Plan sheet 20 of 20 illustrates ‘Short Radius’ Guardrail detail which utilizes wood posts and has a Traf Bar Term Type 2 INCIDENTAL to length of the Short Radius system. This detail is confusing because it suggests Non-Block Guardrail pay limits while it is clearly Short Radius.
The detail shown on Sheet 20 of the plans is correct. The intent is to install non-block guardrail to form the curve and pay for the type 2 terminal on the end. (05/31/2018)

  • Concrete Removal: Special Provision page 3 ‘Concrete Bridge Rail Removal’ and page 4 ‘Concrete Removal’ appear to either be competing with each other for separate pay items or need to be joined together. Please clarify the intent of these two specifications.
Concrete Bridge Rail Removal specifies the contractor to remove only one side of the rail at a time and that the lane must remain closed until the new guardrail is installed. Concrete Removal specifies that saw cuts for the concrete removal are included in the cost of the concrete removal. (05/31/2018)

A1) Map shown on plan sheet 15. This location (SN 039-7093) matches district structure map. A2) An addendum is forthcoming on this issue. SN 076-0022 is the wrong structure number. There is no structure associated with the guardrail location. A3) This is a railroad structure. The railroad structure number is 044-9901. (05/31/2018)
