  • It appears you want to prep the repair areas at the exposed steel piles per SP10. Is the faying surface to be primed? What paint system goes on the new steel? It appears you want to prep the remainder of the exposed steel piles per SP3. Do these areas paint? if so, what paint system?
    Surfaces of the prepared steel cleaned to bare metal shall be painted with either one coat of epoxy mastic between 5 or 7 mils (125 microns to 180 microns) in thickness or one coat of an organic zinc rich primer between 3.5 and 5.0 mils (90 and 125 microns) in thickness. Areas not cleaned to bare metal need not be painted. (04/22/2022)

  • In the Special Provisions, under the 'Traffic Control Plan' heading, it states no live traffic directly over the work areas. Later in the Special Provisions, under the 'Traffic Control Removal' heading, it states all lanes shall be open to traffic and all lane closure traffic control shall be removed during non-working hours. Can lane closures be left in place during non-working hours?
    Yes, lane closures should remain in place as described in TC&P 701401 Special until repairs to the abutment piles are made. This is for both working and non-working hours to minimize the traffic vibrations directly over the work areas. As stated in the special provision, the Traffic Control Removal Special is used unless required by the Contractor’s operation or authorized by the Engineer. (04/19/2022)
