  • Please provide a full grading plan for the proposed wall system including proposed grade at the front of the wall, top of wall, stationing, and top of roadway elevation. At a minimum please provide the as built shop drawings including elevation views and calculations.
The proposed grading at the walls should match the existing grading. The roadway and approach pavement is not raising or lowering. Shop drawings for the existing Reinforced Earth Walls will be posted as Additional Information. (04/19/2022)

  • This is a continuation from our previous inquiry...Will the department take responsibility for the structural adequacy of the rebar in the panels? How will the engineer verify the structural capacity of the panels? If we are to design a partial-height MSE wall we will need the full shop drawings and calculations in order to verify the strap length and loading parameters for the new section of wall.
The new wall should be designed as new construction according to the pertinent design codes. The existing connectors and existing precast wall panels will be evaluated in the field. The engineer will make a decision based on observed section loss in the existing connectors. (04/07/2022)

  • The plans & special provisions note that the existing MSE panels may be re-used if the engineer deems them appropriate. The existing wall was constructed nearly 40 years ago with a design life of 75 years. Is the "new" wall to be designed with a design life of +/-35 years (the balance of the 75 years)? How is the engineer going to certify the level-of-corrosion or remaining life span of the connectors sticking out the back of the panels?
The new wall should be designed as new construction according to the pertinent design codes. The existing connectors and existing precast wall panels will be evaluated in the field. The engineer will make a decision based on observed section loss in the existing connectors. (04/07/2022)

  • Please indicate on Plan Sheet 18 under the General Notes the intended paint system to be used over the areas cleaned to SP-10.
The paint system shall be Organic Zinc Rich Primer / Epoxy / Urethane paint system (OZ/E/U). (04/07/2022)
