  • How will the modification or coring of the PCC surface be paid? 109.04 force account, especially if the as-builts are not available & there is no way to define depth of PCC or how the PCC Shoulders are constructed.
Contractors should refer to the Preface of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction which states "...all aspects of the work are by definition included in the unit price bid unless specified to be paid for separately." Coring is not specified to be paid for separately in these pay items. (04/16/2018)

  • Understood regarding re-using the existing holes in the PCC surfaces. If modifying the existing holes or making new holes are needed, will 'as-built' drawings be provided to assist in determining the depth of concrete and type of construction that an be expected?
As-built drawings are not available. (04/16/2018)

  • • Q2a: If modifying the hole size is needed or additional holes are needed, please provide as-built drawings to determine the concrete depth and type of construction that can be expected. • Q2b: How will the PCC coring be paid? 109.04 force account, especially if the as-builts are not available & there is no way to define depth of PCC or how the PCC Shoulders are constructed.

  • PCC surfaces under Guardrail: Locations 1, 13, 37, 38, 95 to 98 appear to have PCC surfaces. Several of the locations have boxed out or holes formed with sonotubes. This represents a significant quantity of guardrail. • Q1: Will the new guardrail posts be driven back into the existing holes without modifying the shape of the hole?
If the existing hole can be utilized with the proposed guardrail then it can be used. if the spacing or other conditions are different than the current standard then post would need to be placed in a new hole. (04/12/2018)

  • Timber / HMA Curb: • It appears that there is a timber or asphalt curb running along the entire length of the guardrail at Locations 99 and 100. Please confirm that this will remain in place during the guardrail replacement. IF not, how will the removal and possible replacement be paid? Force Account??
The curb is to remain in place, any damage of the curb from the operations of the contractor when removing and installing the guardrail would be at the contractors expense to repair. (04/12/2018)

  • Type 6, 6A and 6B traffic barrier terminals: The standard calls for a double nested W-Beam rail element when there is a continuous curb running the length of the terminal. Q1: Please identify which locations, if any, will have a continuous curb under the T6 terminal that would necessitate a double nested W-Beam.
Contractors should read the Invitation For Bids, paragraph g, EXAMINATION OF CONTRACT DOCUMENTS AND SITE OF THE WORK, regarding the existing site conditions: From that paragraph, please note: “The bidder shall inspect in detail the site of the proposed work, investigate and become familiar with all the local conditions affecting the contract and the detailed requirements for construction. Submission of a bid shall be a conclusive assurance and warranty the bidder has made these examinations and the bidder understands all requirements for the performance of the work. If the bid is accepted, the bidder will be responsible for all errors in the proposal resulting from a failure or neglect to comply with these instructions. The Department will not be responsible for any costs, expenses, losses, or change in anticipated profits resulting from such failure or neglect of the bidder to make these examinations. (04/12/2018)

  • GR Removal and Installation (Special): • In the event that guardrail cannot be completed in the same day as the removal, and as customary, will it be acceptable to place lighted barrels to delineate the area where the guardrail has not yet been installed or remains incomplete?
Per the Special Provisions: "At each location, after the existing guardrail is removed, the proposed guardrail shall be completed at that location that same day or as directed by the Engineer. Multiple crews may be required to ensure the work is completed. Any inconvenience or delays caused the Contractor in complying with this Special Provision will be at no additional cost to the Department." (04/12/2018)
