  • On the pavement marking schedule it calls for short term pavement marking in small quantities in all of the stages. There is no paving in most of these stages so we are trying to figure out why short term would be used. What is this pay item for? Should this really be included in the temporary pavement marking pay item?
Std. Specs. do not specify that "paving" coincides with the need for short term or temporary (see 703). There are lane shifts on existing pavement for some of the Stages, hence the inclusion of short-term and temporary. (01/16/2018)

  • For the temporary pavement marking removal there are two pay items for pavement marking removal that are exactly the same quantity with the exception of a little bit of removal on Holy Cross Lane in stage 2D. The Temporary Pavement Marking Removal is obviously for removing the temporary lines that are put down for staged traffic control. What is the Pavement Marking Removal - Water Blasting supposed to be used for?
Water-blasting is needed to remove paint pavement markings from the final surface of both new and existing pavements. (01/16/2018)

  • Can you confirm the quantity for the Bit Prime Coat, and tell us how much of this material is intended to be placed on the Aggregate Bases, and how much on milled/hard surfaces? The Paving Schedule shows prime placed in the pavement widening areas, but not in the construction of any of the Runarounds. The prime is shown under the Stab. Subbase HMA 4.5" in Stage 2A, but not under the Stab. Subbase in Stage 2B. There is also no Prime shown for the Level Binder or HMA Binder placed in Stage 2C
There is no prime on runarounds as they get removed. All aggregate receiving HMA on top of it, all milled surfaces, and all HMA lists are to be primed. per Std. Specs.,whether shown in plans or not - that was the intent. The 795.0# and some of the other Bitum. Mtl. (Pr. Ct.) quantities are not shown in the Stage that they might be utilized. Prime for the leveling binder and binder mentioned is included in the TOTAL quantity at the small area associated with the PCC Pavt. + HMA stab. Bbase (01/11/2018)

  • Can you clarify a few things for the Trench Drain Details as shown on Plan Sheet 103? The arrows for "CA-6 Pad" & "Class SI Concrete Throughout" both point to the bottom section of the detail. And can you give a bar detail for the #3 Reinforcement bars shown that go in the trench drain?
The bottom of the section detail is the CA-6 pad. The Class SI arrow applies to the box - the leader didn't get extended fully to the box itself. A bar detail is not necessary. The box detail shows #3's at 12" centers throughout the drain walls as shown on the section. The #3's simply are in from the wall at approximate mid-point. The contractor will need to construct the box per the trench drain grate manufacturer's specifications. (01/11/2018)

  • On Plan sheet #128 the Railing has been called out as Parapet rail. IDOT would typically call this out as Bike Railing since it is not mounted on an elevated concrete Parapet wall. Is the tubing required to be CVN tested according to 1006.34(b) of the Standard Specifications? This would add long lead times for rolling and IDOT testing. Please advise.
Parapet Railing is not required to be CVN tested for this particular project. Plan sheet 124 will be revised by addendum. (01/05/2018)

  • The picket spacing on page 128 calls out a maximum distance between pickets of 5 ½”. This exceeds BOCA 4” Maximum spacing between the pickets. Please confirm the allowable spacing between the picket, 5 ½” noted on plan sheet or 4” BOCA maximum space.
The 5 1/2" spacing between pickets called out on the plans meets applicable AASHTO requirements and can remain as shown on the Plans. Any BOCA reference is likely outdated and of questionable applicability. (01/05/2018)

  • On page 11 of the plans, under the legend agenda, should P26 be 8-3/4"PCC pavement (42000316) and P17 be 9" PCC pavement (42000401)?
The P26 on Sheet 11 should be "PCC Pavt., 8 3/4" (Jointed)" and not stamped colored PCC 9". Sheet 11 will be revised by addendum. (01/05/2018)

  • Parapet Railing: 1) Please confirm the coating on the railing. Galvanized or Painted? If painted, is the color known ? 2) Chain Link Fence: The schedule on plan sheet 33 suggests the fence location between 29+00 & 31+54 RT. Plan sheets 40-41 do not show the fence. Please amend the plan sheet to show the final location and configuration of the fence.
    1) The parapet railing shall be Galvanized (Art. 509.05). 2) The PROPOSED fence goes back essentially in the same location as where the current existing fence is located. The Schedule was relied upon to simply call out where the new fence will be at. Final location and configuration will be shown on revised sheets 60 and 124 in a forthcoming addendum. (01/05/2018)

  • On sheet 11 of the plans the typical section Station 31+44.47 to Station 33 + 01.99 calls for the inner circulatory pavement to be Stamped Colored PCC Pavement 9"Jointed. Will you provide details such as color and stamp pattern? Will there be a pay item added to include this Special Pavement? This same typical section calls for the outer circulatory pavement to be PCC pavement 8 3/4" jointed. According to the Paving Schedule it appears this should be PCC pavement 9" Jointed.
P26 on Sheet 11 should read "PCC Pavt 8 3/4" (Jtd.)" and not the stamped and colored 9" pavt. We did away with the stamped and colored pay item and didn’t change P26 on Sheet 11. An addendum is forthcoming. (01/05/2018)

  • In the special provisions, under the various concrete pay items for Curing and Protection it states that all concrete shall be covered with curing compound and thoroughly wetted and covered with polyethylene sheeting and/or wetted burlap. Are you requiring both methods of curing per 1020.13(a) of the IDOT Specs. to be used simultaneously? This is not typical or practical.
What typically happens is that the pour is made and then the curing compound is placed. Then, rain starts to fall and then it has to be covered as the compound runs down the drains. Yes, the Specs. call for both. (01/02/2018)

  • There are discrepancies between the 8.75" and 9" pavement details on the typical sections of the plans. Please clarify the correct locations and quantities of the 8.75" and 9" pavement.
The only location with the PCC Pavt. 8 3/4 (Jointed), 571 sy, is in the truck circulatory, in the center of the roundabout. The B-9.12 curb detail on the Typicals belies this thickness of the circulatory as do the callouts on the Typicals. See the "Paving Schedule" for further clarification. (01/02/2018)
