  • Location 16: The plans call for the guardrail to be positioned 8’ off EOP. This effectively places the guardrail within a concrete shoulder, typical on both sides of the roadway. Please provide as-built drawings for the shoulder or declare the maximum depth of concrete we can expect to core-drill through, OR will the effort to core the PCC shoulder be tracked on Force Account basis?
Location 16: According to the original construction plans the shoulder that will need coring for the new posts is 9” thick. This work should be included in the bid price for the guardrail. (07/24/2019)

  • Location 21(1 of 2): The plans call for the guardrail to be positioned 3’ off EOP. Plan sheet 7 also directs the coring through the slope wall. This directive will position the post near the bottom of the slope wall which could translate into trying to core drill through the Slope Wall anchor which, depending on the type, can be up to 24” or more in depth. Given that it is impossible to bid ‘unknown’ incidental work, please provide the following:‘As Built’ drawings of the existing slope wall.
Location 21: According to the original construction plans there is no toe wall for the existing 4” thick slope wall. Coring through existing slope wall should be included in the bid price for the guardrail. (07/24/2019)

  • Location 21 (2 of 2): Cross section illustrating how the post will align with the slope wall anchor. If the slope wall concrete depth and the type and depth of the slope wall anchor remains ‘UNKNOWN’, the effort to get through the concrete should be deleted from this contract and tracked on a force account basis. Contract 72G87 from the June Letting addressed this issue by providing Pay Items 50104650 Slope Wall Removal and 51100100 Slope Wall 4 Inch. This could also be utilized at Location 16?
Location 21: According to the original construction plans there is no toe wall for the existing 4” thick slope wall. Coring through existing slope wall should be included in the bid price for the guardrail. (07/24/2019)

  • Location 21: Please confirm that there will be one continuous run of guardrail going under both sets of bridges on each side of the road?
Location 21: The proposed guardrail will be continuous under both structures, no connections to piers. (07/24/2019)

  • The TBT TYPE 6A SPL. states to drill holes in existing bridge rail to allow installation of the guardrail connection plate assembly and modify connection angles to fit existing rail caps. The standard connection plates will not work with the existing bridge rail at locations 1 and 12 and is questionable at location 13. The connection angles will not work at location12. Can IDOT supply detailed drawings of what is to be expected?
Location 1 has bridge rail with the small rail element on top. The connection plate could be used if the gap between the two rail elements is 6 inches. The excess plate above the top of the bridge rail would need to be cut off. Additional holes must be drilled in the connection plate to allow bolting to the thrie beam. Location 12 has single element bridge rail and the connection plate would not be applicable at all and would be omitted. Bolt the thrie beam end shoe to the rail element with the top of the thrie beam even with the top of the bridge rail. Connection angles can be fitted after holes are drilled in new locations. Location 13 appears identical to a location 2 miles west of Shumway on IL 33 where this item was effectively used. (07/16/2019)
