Painting - Sheet 9, note 2 and sheet 6, notes 6 & 8 are ambiguous. What painting is required for the new galvanized steel and existing steel surfaces? Will painting be a separate bid item?

All existing steel in contact with repair plates shall be cleaned per the methods indicated in the special provision "Cleaning and Painting Contact Surface Area of Existing Steel Structures" per note #6 on sheet 6. The areas of the bearing stools that are to receive welded repair plates shall specifically be cleaned by SSPC-SP-11 per note #8 on sheet 6 and the “Cleaning Prior to Welding” notes on sheet 7. The cleaning note #2 on sheet 9 is just a reminder to clean contact surface areas; i.e. as covered by note # 6 on sheet 6. The cost of the cleaning of existing steel at contact surfaces is included in the cost of Structural Steel Repair per the special provision "Cleaning and Painting Contact Surface Area of Existing Steel Structures". In lieu of painting new steel, all new steel shall be galvanized per the special provision ”Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Structural Steel” and the cost of the galvanizing is included in the cost of the Structural Steel Repair per note #9 on sheet 6.
