  • The project currently calls out to use temporary severe use attenuators (pay item 70600280). The only severe use attenuators on the IDOT list are fully redirective. This would require us to drill into concrete pavement +/-6". Since most of these attenuators are going into elevated decks we will more than like hit (and possibly cut) rebar in these decks. Please review and advise if this is the intent or if it is acceptable to change this to non-redirective attenuators (narrow).
    The impact attenuator specified does require anchoring therefore “Impact Attenuators, Temporary (Non-Redirective, Narrow), Test Level 3” will be specified. An addendum will be issued with this change. (10/31/2018)

  • Impact Attenuators – Severe Use Narrow TL3: Please provide a more specific location than what is identified on plan sheet 12 and detail of what these units are protecting. Width for narrow units typically is 36” or less.
    The location of new impact attenuators are called out on Sheet 12 of the plans at the gore between Roadway G and Ramp S and the gore between Roadway R and Ramp 0. Sheet 18 of the plans defines the roadway and ramp names. The geometry of the gores are defined on Sheets 195 and 216 of the plans. Additional information about the construction of these areas can be found in the existing structure plans uploaded with this contract. (10/31/2018)

  • Why is Shotcrete not allowed? Is it because of the Galvanic Anodes?
    Resistivity issues are a primary concern when using anodes. Repair materials with high resistivity will impede the ability of embedded anodes to provide sufficient cathodic protection. This factor and various others were evaluated when considering the inclusion of anodic systems in the plans and specifications. At this time, no changes are warranted. (10/19/2018)

  • The special provision for structural repair of concrete states that shotcrete will not be allowed for the concrete repairs. Why is this? There are multiple overhead repairs where shotcrete will be required, and forming and pouring will not produce the same quality of repair. The IDOT standard specification for structural repair of concrete allows either method at the contractors discretion.
    The underside repairs are limited to tie beams, where the repair areas will extend to both vertical side faces. In most cases, repair areas will also include a portion of the side face as well. After concrete removal, the contractor will be able to construct formwork that allows for concrete access points on each vertical face to be constructed at elevations that are in excess of the lowest elevation of the existing concrete that remains. This will permit concrete to fill the forms and flow under the tie beam. Having access points on each side of the tie beam will allow for concrete levels to be monitored (10/18/2018)
