  • Pedestrian Rail Layout: The plans are not completely clear as to where this railing is positioned. The cross sections offer hints but do not help with the customary plan layout. Plan sheets 46-48 illustrate retaining walls but not the railing. Also helpful, full station numbers as to avoid confusion to the location of the detailed walls. Please put a request into the design team to have the railing layout detailed. The layout is critical.
    The District feels that the plans and specifications are sufficient. Please bid the contract according to the published documents. (01/16/2019)

  • Pedestrian Rail Detail: Plan sheets 51-52 illustrate a convoluted non-standard pipe handrail system. Q: Will it be acceptable to substitute this detail with the commonly utilized IDOT Standard 2 line parapet rail (with pickets if needed) per the typical details of IDOT Base Sheet R-29?
    The handrail detail is fine as shown. We do not want to use R-29 because it is a much taller rail than what is needed at this location. The Contractors should bid on this item as shown in the plans. (01/16/2019)

  • Guardrail Standards in Plans: Plan sheets 66-69 illustrate non-MGS guardrail and serves as to contradict the list of MGS guardrail standards on plan sheet 2. Will a Schedule of Quantities accompany the upcoming Addendum ??
    A schedule of quantities will not be part of the addendum. (01/10/2019)

  • AISC: Please confirm that the fabrications of parapet rail / pedestrian rail will need to be performed by a fabrication shop certified by AISC as prescribed in IDOT Article 106.08 ‘Certification of Metal Fabricators’.
    AISC certification will be required on applicable items according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction (01/10/2019)

    The plans clearly show that the railing is to be located on top of the concrete barrier and flush up to the bridge pier.   • Guardrail Schedule of Quantities: Plan sheet 25 prescribes guardrail at three locations. One has Guardrail Type A – 6 FT. This run is located, generally between 91+25 to 93+25 RT. This includes the terminals (87.5 LF) leaving about 112.5 to 125 LF of guardrail shown. It is customary to include a Schedule of Quantities with the plans. • Where is the balance of the Guardrail Type A 6 FT located?
    The project should be bid according to the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Highway Standards, and the plans and specifications available online. (01/08/2019)

  • Impact Attenuator – FRD NAR TL 2: Pay Item 64300240 calls for a NAR (Narrow) attenuator (narrow is typically up to 36” width). This pay item does not appear to properly protect the bridge abutments on site. A pay item for a WIDE unit may be needed, as utilized on previous project, to properly protect the existing abutments. Please review and advise the appropriate width unit and or Pay Item needed for this item.
    The pay item is correct. The attenuators are being placed in advance of concrete barrier, not the piers. The concrete barrier protects the piers. The width of the concrete barrier is 32", therefore, the narrow width is adequate. (01/07/2019)

  • Chain Link Gate 6 x 14 Double: Plan sheet 24 prescribes the Chain Link Gate 6’ x 14’ Double The roadway width is shown at 20’ plus the curbs. • Please clarify the width of the gate that is needed

  • AISC: Please confirm that the fabrications associated with these items will need to be performed by a fabrication shop certified by AISC as prescribed in IDOT Article 106.08 ‘Certification of Metal Fabricators’.
    Since no items were specified, all fabrication will be constructed according to the spec book. (01/07/2019)

  • Type 6 Traffic Barrier Terminal: The standard calls for an INCIDENTAL double nested W-Beam rail element when there is a continuous curb running the length of the terminal. Please confirm the need for a double nested W-Beam, as the guardrail does appear to have a curb in front of it. The INCIDENTAL double nesting of any TBT 6, when it is needed, should be declared in the plans and not be left to chance or interpretation.
    There is curb and gutter running along the length of the terminal as shown on the plans. The Type 6 Traffic Barrier Terminal standard specifically calls out for the placing of two sections of W-beams. Therefore, double nesting is included with the Type 6 Traffic Barrier Terminal pay item. The Standard is clear in this matter, it is not necessary to call out the double nesting on the plan sheet. Please confirm which system we are to use. IF non-MGS is selected, which TBT 1 SPL Tangent terminal should be included with our proposal: MASH or NCHRP 350?
